When dealing with physical evidence, it is often the situation that key information for a case is not accessible via standard examination. From component authentication to observation of manufacturing defects, the legal hurdles related to the destruction of evidence may prevent access to data needed to provide your clients with the best legal advice. Computed tomography (CT) and X-ray imaging are powerful tools that allow the characterization of both the external and internal structures of an object and, thanks to the non-destructive nature of these techniques, they are playing an increasingly important role in product liability litigation. In this talk, we present examples in which CT and X-ray imaging were successfully leveraged to non-destructively assess evidence to support litigation-like cases in a variety of fields such as medical devices, consumer electronics, fire investigation, and batteries. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to apply CT and x-ray imaging to assess the design, manufacture, and use conditions of products in litigation cases.
